More African Americans Seeking Plastic Surgery

A great deal of focus has been placed on the increase in cosmetic procedures in the United States.  A quieter trend has to do with Black America and the increase in plastic surgery procedures performed at their behalf.  In 2002 the American Society of Plastic Surgery reports that there were over 375 thousand procedures for that year on African Americans.   In 2003 there was a 30 percent increase (or over 485 thousand procedures)  in those numbers of more than 8.7 million patients who had plastic surgery.

In 2006 ASAPS reports nearly 11.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were done last year, 20 percent of which were conducted on racial and ethnic minorities (that’s over 2 million procedures).

This increase parallels the increases in cosmetic procedures throughout the nation but is growing at a rate much larger rate.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, for Hispanics and African-Americans, the most popular procedures in 2005 were nose reshaping, breast augmentation and liposuction. For Asians, they were nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and breast augmentation.

The rate of minority plastic surgeons is also increasing, albeit at a slower rate.  Reports show approximately 3% of the practicing plastic surgeons are minorities.
