Breast Augmentation Most Popular
Since data collection began in 1992 breast augmentation is now the most common cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. According to the 2006 ASPS National Clearinghouse there were over 329,000 breast augmentations performed last year.
Breast augmentations eclipsed rhinoplasty of which there were over 307,000 performed last year. The third most popular was liposuction (303,000). Fourth and Fifth place were occupied by blepharoplasty and abdominoplasty (233,000 and 146,000).
For all types of plastic surgery (cosmetic and reconstructive), there were 16 million procedures performed in 2006. Of that 16 million, 11 million were cosmetic, a seven percent increase.
Certainly some of this stems from the approval of silicone implants by the FDA in November but given that this occurred relatively late in 2006 there are likely to be even higher numbers reported in 2007 secondary to pent-up demand.
